Department of Political Science

The initial steps in the department’s journey began in 2007 when the Faculty of Economics at Omar Al-Mukhtar University, Derna Branch (at that time), started teaching Political Science as a subject for students in the General Studies program. The Department of Political Science was officially established based on the decision of the President of Omar Al-Mukhtar University No. (195) issued on 19/5/2009, thanks to the combined efforts of the founding faculty members. The Department of Political Science at the Derna branch was opened in the academic year 2011/2012

To consolidate and deepen the teaching of scientific political knowledge based on the principles, rules, and mechanisms of public affairs management (governance) in Libya and various countries worldwide, both theoretically and practically, ultimately preparing specialists through robust and high-level scientific and political model curricula to serve our country. Additionally, to organize conferences and scientific seminars aimed at deepening and disseminating the culture and knowledge of modern political concepts

To enhance students’ capabilities in political knowledge and provide a comprehensive understanding of political systems, identifying elements of change and continuity within these systems locally, regionally, and internationally. * To increase students’ knowledge of the mechanisms of democratic systems, particularly concerning electoral systems, levels of representation, and the conscious and rational exercise of the right to vote. * To support students’ ability to study and analyze political ideas and their impact on reality and the political developments that have occurred in political theory, both ancient, modern, and contemporary. * To increase students’ knowledge of Arab and Islamic intellectual output in the political phenomenon and the lessons learned from it in managing political affairs in the present time. * To raise students’ ability to understand and analyze political events on the international stage and the mechanisms and principles of international relations and diplomacy. * To prepare qualified personnel capable of working in state institutions, civil society organizations, and the media. * To provide the community with the expertise of the department’s professors in conducting courses and lectures, completing research, and providing political consultation in a way that enhances political awareness in society.

High school diploma with a minimum GPA of 75%, passing the personal interview, passing written tests if any, submitting all required documents within specified deadlines.
