English Language

There is no doubt that English is a global language, used in many countries and taught in most universities. This department was opened in the Faculty of Arts at Derna University in the academic year (1997 – 1998 AD), and the university was named Derna University at its opening. Until the academic year (2023 – 2024), this department has produced approximately (24 graduating classes) with a total of (708 students: 149 males and 559 females).

The department seeks to prepare graduates who possess advanced linguistic skills, adhere to quality standards, respect ethical values and principles, encourage excellence in education and scientific research, contribute to scientific research and linguistic, literary, and comparative literature studies in the field of English language, and contribute to achieving communication between peoples by graduating individuals capable of translation and cultural exchange.

The department's mission lies in graduating qualified cadres in the field of English language, translating the visions and ideas of non-Arabic speaking countries, and facilitating dialogue and communication between peoples. The department strives to play a leading regional role in teaching, training, and research.

1. Preparing scientifically qualified human cadres and opening up job opportunities by preparing and training them according to quality standards. 2. Introducing the English language and its rich cultural heritage through courses developed by specialists in this field. 3. Focusing on the practical aspect by training students in listening and speaking skills to prepare them on how to interact with native speakers. 4. Working to train students in the field of written and simultaneous translation and qualifying them as translators to work in companies, embassies, and conferences, as well as translating international literary works. 5. Preparing the necessary programs at the level of university students and postgraduate students. 6. Providing students with extensive theoretical and scientific knowledge about the English language and English literature. 7. Providing graduates with the linguistic knowledge, skills, and competence to enable them to work successfully in the field of advanced academic studies and in the practical life of the community. High school diploma with a minimum GPA of 75%, passing the personal interview, passing written tests if any, submitting all required documents within specified deadlines.
