About the College

The Faculty of Medicine at the University of Derna was established by virtue of the decision of the former General People’s Committee No. (308) of 1430 AH issued on 9/17/1999 AD. Since its establishment, it has sought to achieve its goals of effectively contributing to health awareness programs, providing society with doctors in various branches of medical sciences, conducting research and studies in the fields of medicine, and supporting scientific research.
And building bridges of cooperation with similar scientific institutions inside and outside the country.. Forty (40) male and female students with a high school diploma in the science section joined the college upon its opening. This batch graduated in the academic year 2007/2008 AD. In 2005, Mr. / Secretary of the General People's Committee issued a decree regarding the reorganization of universities, merging the University of Derna with Omar Al-Mukhtar University to become one university.
Although it is administratively and financially affiliated with Omar Al-Mukhtar University, all clinical faculty members are Derna doctors with PhDs and clinical training at Al-Wahda Teaching Hospital - Derna. Thirteen batches have graduated from the Derna branch of Omar Al-Mukhtar University.
The 14th batch is the first batch of graduates from the University of Derna after its dissolution. In 2021, the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research issued Decree No. 207 of 2021 regarding the separation of the University of Derna and Al-Qubba branches from Omar Al-Mukhtar University and the restructuring of the university under the name of the University of Derna, which has legal status and is financially and administratively independent. The Faculty of Medicine - University of Derna accommodates 900 male and female students in various years, and is affiliated with 66 faculty members, 50% of whom are graduates of the college who have completed their postgraduate and detailed studies.

Admission

The college determines the number of students admitted to it in accordance with its capacity, based... on a decision adopted by the university on which it accepts admission applications. The college may form a committee for personal and academic interviews to select those who possess the required qualities in a medical student from among the applicants and who meet the remaining general admission requirements. The student’s admission to the college is subject to the committee’s decision. New student procedures are completed during the week prior to the start of studies and after the results of the personal interview are announced.
